IES Releases 2007 School Crime & Safety Study

The Institute of Education Sciences National Center for Education Statistics released their 2007 study results on School Crime and Safety in the United States. I feel it’s needless to say that the statistics are still incredibly alarming when it comes to bullying and kids feeling safe at school. It’s not all bad news, there were some declining figures. I would recommend that you take a moment to read the study at the link above. Here’s some of the statistics given from this study:

  • 24% of public schools report that bullying is a daily or weekly problem
  • 24% of students report that there are gangs at their school and that number jumps to 36% for urban schools
  • 28% of studients aged 12-18 in 2005 reported being bullied at school in the last 6 months.  Out of this 28%, 25% said it happens once or twice a month, 11% say it happens to them once or twice a week, and 8% say it happens to them daily.
  • In 2005, 6% of students ages 12-18 said they avoided doing an activity at school in the last 6 months because they feared being attacked or harmed.

Read the whole study at the website. It definitely shows that there is still much work to be done to lower the numbers of those affected by bullying.
